Stop safely
As soon as you notice that you have a flat tire, like a knock, here is the car to the side or the tire pressure indicator lights up - gradually reduce speed and stop in any safe place for you together. Find a wide shoulder, parking lot or any other level surface away from the roadway where it will be safe. Immediately turn on your hazard warning lights to warn other drivers, and apply the parking brake once you’ve stopped.Inspect the Tire
Once you’re safely off the road, get out and inspect the flat tire. Look for any obvious damage such as:🔹A nail or screw lodged in the tread
🔹A gash or tear on the sidewall
🔹Low or completely flat tire pressure
🔹A gash or tear on the sidewall
🔹Low or completely flat tire pressure
If you notice a small puncture in the tread (not the sidewall), you may be able to repair it with a tire plug or sealant. If the damage is severe, replacing the tire with a spare is your best option.
Decide Between Repair or Replacement
Repairing the tire: If the hole is small (less than 1/4 inch) and located in the tread area, you can use a tire repair kit or aerosol sealant (like Fix-a-Flat). These are temporary fixes that may allow you to drive to a nearby tire shop for a permanent repair.
Replacing the tire: If you have a full- size or donut spare in your trunk, replacing the damaged tire is a good option - especially if the puncture is in the sidewall or the tire is completely shredded.
How to Replace a Flat Tire with a Spare
- Gather your tools: You’ll need a jack, lug wrench, and your spare tire. These are usually located in your trunk or under the cargo area.
- Loosen the lug nuts slightly while the car is still on the ground.
- Position the jack under the frame near the flat tire and raise the car until the tire is off the ground.
- Remove the lug nuts and the flat tire.
- Mount the spare tire, tighten the lug nuts by hand.
- Lower the car and then finish tightening the lug nuts with the wrench in a crisscross pattern.
